American Curl

american curlJust as the name suggests, the American Curls originates in America. The breed consists of two varieties. The semi-longhaired and shorthaired. The American Curl breed is fairly unknown in Europe, although more and more countries are beginning to recognize the breed. The first cat with the typical, backwards curled ears was named Shulamith, a common black housecat. Shulasmit got a litter of two kittens which had backwards curled ears. Curious of how it came, they discovered that this was just a spontaneous mutation. Because this was such a beautiful and unique appearance, the breeders kept the characteristic of the rear curled ears to create a new breed, the American Curl.

The American Curl is born with straight ears. Only after 3 to 5 days do the ears begin to curl slightly backwards, the curl is completed after about 16 weeks. They have medium bodies with a sleek, slender and elongated body, all parts of the body should be in proportion with each other and under no circumstances should the cat becomes too coarse or dainty.

Coat and pattern

There are both shorthaired and semi-longhaired American Curls, an undercoat is virtually absent. The coat feels soft and silky. Little fluffy hairs coming from the inside to the outside of the ear shavings should always be present and small fluffs on the upper side of the ear forming an additional positive element.

They are very affectionate and very much set on human attention and physical contact. They love to play and usually seem to enjoy the company of young children. They are also know for staring contests with their surroundings or owners. They are very curious. Because this breeds keeps active and playful their entire lives, the reputation was given “that they never grow up.”

Care and Maintenance

The coat is very easy to maintain, it is recommended to the moult with a brush or comb through it to remove dead hairs. Since the ears are more open compared to the straight ears of a common cat, they are more susceptible to dirt and they should still be checked regularly. You can clean them with an ear cleaner.
