Top 5 Biggest Domestic Cats

And by big cats we don’t mean lions and tigers, although those are awesome too, but we’ll take a look at domestic pets. What if you just want more to love? check out this list.

5. Siberian

Siberian award winning cat Alexandra

Siberian Forest Cats originate from Russia, their thick and long coats protect them from cold climates. These cats can get pretty large and many current long hair breeds are said to date back to this mega kitten.

4. Norwegian Forest Cat

Norwegian Forest Cat Jami

Closely related to the Siberian cat, the Norwegian Forest cat shares many of its characteristics. It is said that these cats where introduced by Vikings around 1000 AD. Like the Viking warrior, this cat is big. Chihuahuas better step aside when this gentle giant comes around

3. Maine Coon

Maine Coon

There are many legends about this impressive Goliath. One story states the Maine Coon is a crossbreed between a Lynx and a Raccoon.  But the real origin lays in crossbreeds between big long-haired domestic cats. These big cats are know for their sweet and gently character.

2. Rag-doll

Big Ragdoll

Rag-dolls are one of the biggest breeds around. It takes a kitten 3 years to grow to its mature size. Introduced in the 1960 by Ann Baker, said to be a crossbreed between an Angora and an unknown or possibly wild breed. There are few cats that come close to these mega-furrballs.

1. Savannah F-1

At the top of the list we find the Savannah F-1. This cat is HUGE. Its a bit of a cheater, its a domestic cat, but with a wild background. A Siamese cat was crossbred with an African (wild) Serval cat. This breed has only recently been accepted as an official breed, and its probably the large domestic kitty around. The Savannah can get as big as a good sized dog and you better not mess with this puss. Unlike many other cats, Savannah’s usually love water, can be walked on a leash and come close to dogs in behavior. Most Savannah owners report that they are very gently and loyal companions, but don’t forget that this domestic cat can still be  “wild” at heart. Not bad for a house cat!

The size of a any specific cat will also depend on their heritage and gender, there are some Maine-coons that get bigger than Rag-dolls and vice versa.

  • Why Bengal cat is not in the list?

“Some maine coons are a lot bigger than rag dolls, and can outweigh savannas”
I have seen more Ragdoll Cats being Hugh actually.
Some reputable sites list Ragdoll males reaching 25 to 35+ pounds and Not fat!
Maine Coons are definitely large, but generally I see the max. weight of them around 25 pounds – maybe up to 30 if fat.
Of course any breed varies – some Ragdolls and Maine Coons only get to be about 15 to 20 pounds. 🙂

  • Do Savannas like other cats of othe races?

    • Er Win (Cats Around The Globe)

Yes they do. But do not forget that it also helps to introduce the cats when they are kittens and also keep a close eye to their behavior the first few weeks.

Regarding the Savannah and those wishing to add one as a member of their family… Do your research! Because of the lineage of the Savannah, and the fact that they are not far removed from their wild side, there are laws of the location where you live to look into. Some places are requiring licenses to own these hybrids, others don’t allow them at all, while still others are legal to own an animal that is farther removers, for example an F1 or F2 is illegal but anything past an F3 is okay.

  • Serval or descendents of servals such as the Savannah F 1 are tough cats to domesticate. They are technically still a wild animal with wild attributes. They can leap 10 -15 feet, with claws like a Bobcat. They are only partial to one owner which it will defend like a child, so i a stranger gets close….watch out. Cost if anyone is interested is approximately $5000 – $7500. Not a cheap price to make a potentially bad decision.

Do your research. Bengals, Savannahs and many other hybrids even removed from the original crosses can be bad bad bad cats to have. Why risk a hybrid wild animal when you can get domestics that look just as amazing? Example: Ocicat; Egyptian Mau; if you are looking for wild looking cats. Classic Bombay cats look like black panthers; pixie bobs (some say are hybrids but its bunk) and highlanders are wild looking cats but not wild in the slightest. Many were made from regular domestic crosses with purebreds and/or landrace natural breeds etc. Look around, use wikipedia. Check out the cat fancy sites. There are domestics for everyone. Most are cheaper too. Wild animals/hybrids are like leaving a loaded pistol on your computer desk. You just never know for sure what can happen. Domestics can be unpredictable in the right circumstances, why add in a wild/hybrid factor and possibly endanger people and other pets around you? Would you want to carry that guilt the rest of your life?

  • Don’t forget about the chausie!! They’re HUGE.

  • What is a Chausie? Dose anyone have a pic of it I’m looking to get a large cat I love cats but I want a large one my aunt when I was much younger had a pair of Russian Blues

  • Er Win (Cats Around The Globe)

Crysti, It is an Egyption cat breed. They can get large too. Wiki said this:

“The Chausie is a domestic breed of cat that was developed by breeding a few individuals from a nondomestic species to a far greater number of domestic cats. The Chausie was first recognized as a domestic breed by The International Cat Association”

  • Exotic-looking yet super-friendly, Mokave Jag Cats can reach up to 28 pounds! Check out their photos on the Mokave Cats website.

we just got a Maine Coon kitten unknowingly how big they get. I am excited to see how he turns out

  • My chausie cat weights 40 lbs. He is Huge! Why arn’t they considered one of the largest?

  • Remember these incredible breeds can harbor a lot of heartbreak. My beloved Ozzy died early this morning from congestive heart failure. He was only 8 years old! I couldn’t be more heartbroken. Apparently this is a common problem with the large breed cats.

  • I Would love to own another in the future.I was totally in love with this gentle loving giant cat. Rest in peace Ozzy boo boo

  • “original crosses can be bad bad bad cats to have”

This is simply not true. The bad comments I have seen have only been from owner who should have not owned a cat to begin with. People who don’t have problems don’t go posting on the internet about how they don’t have issues. Just like a golden retriever or any other more athletic intelligent breed some people simple don’t match with the breed. People who buy an athletic type animal yet wont met its requirement for attention and mental stimulation.

I find it sad when people blame an animal behavior problems not on them selves when 99% are the fault of owners not understand the needs of the animals. Every single pet Ive placed has been great. Ive literally only had one issue after 8 years a lady moved, husband died and the was scared of her new home. That not because they cats a hybrid! Any cat would act unsure in a new home.

But people jump the gun saying oh no its the exotic in them. Ive even heard of non-educated self claimed breeders that its just the exotic. NO it was the breeder not raising the cat right to begin with then blame the breed. MANY people do the right thing but they charge more than backyard mills, unfortunately people just see price which I understand to an extent.

Example a amazing Maine Coon can cost $1,200 (Parents HCM tested, fixed, shots, everything!) compared to a sickly Maine Coon (Parents not tested, no shots, not fixed and not pretty) post on a classified site that is $500. Some people blame the kitten mills, but the person to blame is some one funding those places. You can do the research, you can pick some one upholding proper ethics.

My friend has Maine Coons, I know first hand that you can get quality from some one like her rather than just buying what is cheap.

  • Whatever breed of cat you have, please feed a bio-appropriate diet. Cats are obligate carnivores and must eat meat. Personally, I feed mine a raw diet, following a recipe from catinfo.org. Whatever you do, don’t feed dry. It’s the worst thing you can do for your fur babies.

  • I am looking for an honest reliable breeder for Maine coon cats …… I am looking to Get a beautiful Maine coon cat …… Any suggestions ?
